The Pickling & Oiling Line

Hot band coils are delivered to the pickle line conveyor by a shuttle car. The hot roll strip moves through a flattener, crop shear and butt welder into an accumulator and scalebreaker. The strip then passes through three turbulent-type pickle tanks. The tanks are granite-lined with water-sealed plastic hoods. The tanks can be drained and restarted without removing and rethreading strip in the pickle line.

Following the pickle tanks, a 5-unit cascade rinse feeds a dryer, followed by a 2-strand intermediate strip accumulator with a storage capacity in excess of 650 feet. After inspection, the strip is delivered either directly to the cold mill or to an exit section that consists of electrostatic oiler, a coiler, conveyor and crane. The pickle line has extensive storage capacity for completed coils awaiting shipment.
