The Severstal Columbus melt shop, consisting of a DC electric arc furnace and ladle furnace feeds a single-strand, thin-slab caster that is coupled to a 6-stand hot strip mill via a tunnel furnace. Plant layout has been designed to accommodate, in a second phase of construction, an additional arc furnace, ladle furnace, tank degasser, continuous caster and tunnel furnace that will feed into the existing hot strip mill, as well as to a second pickle line.
Starting with the melt shop – and continuing throughout the plant – the production capabilities are designed to produce high-quality steels, traditionally available only from integrated mills. For the highest quality steels, a charge consisting of pig iron, HBI/DRI and factory bundles from automotive stamping plants is used during the melt cycle to minimize residuals. Other grades will be made using an appropriate type of scrap.
