The Hot Mill

The hot mill includes a continuous strip production (CSP) caster, a tunnel furnace, and a six-stand hot strip mill, along with a cooling line, coiling facilities and coil handling capabilities.

The caster can produce slabs 2.36 or 2.56 inches (60 or 65 mm) thick, 36 to 74 inches wide, 50 to 180 feet long. Based on a 165-ton heat size, it has an annual rated capacity of 1.7 million tons with a production rate of 200 to 300 tons/hr.

The in-line tunnel reheat/equalizing furnace located between the thin-slab caster and 6-strand hot strip mill has a heating capacity of 338 tons/hour. With an overall length of 855 feet, it consists of a 670-foot stationary furnace and a 185-foot shifter car unit. The latter unit will be used when the second caster is placed in operation in the Phase 2 expansion. With a total heating capacity of approximately 160 million BTU/hour, the furnace consists of five heating zones and two holding zones. Fired by natural gas, the furnace is designed to heat slabs from approximately 1,000 to 2,000°F for rolling on the direct coupled hot strip mill.

The mill is designed to roll product 36 to 74 inches wide, 0.065 to 0.500 inch thick, with a maximum coil weight of 44 tons. With a coil ID of 30 inches, coil OD can vary between 45.7 and 82.7 inches. The principal components of the hot mill include a pendulum shear; a de-scaler; a six-stand (4-high) rolling mill; laminar flow cooling runout table with edge masking; and coil handling units.
