The Cold Mill

The 5-stand, 4-high tandem cold reduction mill has an annual production capacity of approximately 1.1 million tons. The mill can reduce pickled hot band to 0.0124–0.075 inch thick cold rolled strip in widths ranging from 36 inches to 72 inches.

Line equipment includes an entry-end scissor-type shear and a quick-change coupling system and a rotary shear and two tension reels on the exit side of the mill. Coils are removed by an over-head crane to an 88,000 sq. ft. storage bay for further processing. All stands are equipped with forged steel rolls and taper roller bearings. Automatic roll changing can be done with strip in the line. Typically, there are 10 work roll changes per turn, with three backup roll changes every week.

The cold mill includes a batch anneal facility. With an annual capacity of 55,000 tons, the annealing furnace processes cold rolls up to 0.080 inch thick, 36–72 inches wide in coils with an OD of 46–85 inches and a coil ID of 24 inches. The annual system includes a total of 21 work bases, 11 heating bells and 11 cooling bells. A typical annealing cycle is 39 hours; 24 hours of heating and 15 hours of cooling.
